He was born on December 28, 1937 in Surat, India, to Naval Tata and Sonoo. Naval Tata was the adopted son of the Jamsetji Tata’s younger son Ratanji Tata. Jamsetji Tata was the founder of the Tata Group of Companies. Ratan Tata has a brother, Jimmy, and a step-brother, Noel Tata.
Ratan Tata was a student at Campion School in Mumbai. He completed his early schooling there before moving on to further studies abroad. His education during this time laid the foundation for his later academic and professional achievements.
He received his early education from the Campion School, Mumbai and finished his schooling from the Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai. In 1962, he obtained his B.S. in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University, U.S.A.
Completes his education and joins Tata Group, starting on the shop floor of Tata Steel. This hands-on experience allowed him to understand the intricacies of the manufacturing process and the importance of every role within the organization.
Served as a resident representative for the Tata Group in Australia, expanding his international exposure and understanding of global business dynamics.
Appointed Director-in-charge of National Radio and Electronics Company (NELCO), taking on the challenge of reviving a struggling business. He successfully turned around NELCO, demonstrating his ability to revitalize underperforming companies.
Joined the board of Tata Sons, marking a significant step in his journey towards leadership roles within the group.
Completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, enhancing his managerial skills and strategic thinking. This rigorous program equipped him with the tools to address complex business challenges and make informed decisions.

On his 75th birthday, December 28, 2012, he resigned as Chairman of the Tata Group, marking a significant transition. Despite retiring from this prominent role, he remains an active businessman, investing in promising ventures and mentoring young entrepreneurs, showcasing his enduring influence in the business world.
